Handcycling is a relatively new sport and recreation to Australia and although in its infancy, it is quickly becoming a popular activity to satisfy people's needs for fitness and participation in wider community events. A handcycle is designed to enable people to use their upper body to propel a 3 wheel cycle in a similar fashion to a bicycle.
Wheelchair Sports Victoria, in conjunction with CycleSport Victoria will be introducing an inaugural cycling recreation program in 2010, which will include 14 coaching sessions. The aim of this program is to encourage people with a disabilityto get actively involved in cycling by providing access to specialised coaches, sports equipment and a positive social atmosphere. The program offers all forms of cycling, including handcycling, recumbent cycling and ambulant cycling.
