Wheelchair Rugby

About the Sport

Originally known as ‘Murderball', wheelchair rugby has become the fastest growing wheelchair sport in the world.  The sport is primarily designed for quadriplegics, or individuals who have impairment in all four limbs.  It is an exciting sport for both players and spectators alike, as it incorporates elements of several sports, including ice hockey-style checking, the use of a volleyball, and the rules of rugby and football.

Played on a basketball court with four players allowed on at a time, wheelchair rugby is a physically demanding sport that requires players to work together to carry the ball over the opposition's end baseline to score.

How to get Involved

Yarra Trams proudly sponsors the Victorian Wheelchair Rugby League , which is held on Friday nights between 7:00pm-9:00pm at Aqualink in Box Hill.  Consisting of 2 seasons each year, the best players from this local competition are also selected to represent Victoria in the National Wheelchair Rugby League.

Proudly sponsored by Coloplast, the Victorian team participates in weekly training sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre.  The Victorian Team is coached by Mr. Paul Angel, who has previously been part of the Australian Paralympic Team in both Sydney and Athens.
