The origins of wheelchair and disability sports stem from the 1940s in England, with wheelchair sports emerging in Australia twenty years later. It wasn't until 1963 that the Paravics Sports Club was formed by a group of 8 paraplegics who were very keen to participate in the 1964 Tokyo Paralympic Games. With fundraising being a key component in developing sport and recreational opportunities for people with a physical disability, the Paravics Sports Club became much stronger and had over 500 members by the 1990's. By 2000, the Paravics Sports Club changed its name to Wheelchair Sports Victoria, and is now the leading provider for people with a physical disability throughout Victoria.
